Stepping High is the first and longest running ganja festival in Jamaica and the Caribbean, located in West End, Negril. For eleven years the event was underground and was primarily advertised word-of-mouth. Although, fraught with many restraints, the festival attracted scores of tourists from as far afield as Germany, Spain, Japan, and Ghana; neighbouring territories such as Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda among others attended the event, making it the largest ganja festival to date, in the region.  

 

Today, Stepping High has become an enviable brand showcasing the finest strains of ganja and a musical extravaganza which boasts a line-up of local and international acts. It fully embraces the Rastafarian culture which is an invaluable part of the Jamaican culture.

 

Stepping High creates a one of a kind, authentic, Jamaican experience and a vibe of  “oneness” or "inity", friendships and sharing of different cultures.  The event also includes exhibitions, where  farmers from the community can exchange knowledge on best farming techniques and by-products of ganja.

 

 

Who We Are

 

Stepping High is primarily a social enterprise, started by the Connells, who were pioneers in the development of tourism in Negril. Daniel Connell was the first person to build tradional lodging in Negril for the Flower Children or Hippies. He was also the first person in Westmoreland parish to be imprisoned for the posession of ganja. 

 

It was only natural that his grandson, Lyndon Connell (founder of Stepping High), and family would be hospitable to tourists. They would later host a send off party for some visiting friends who were seeking an authentic, cultural experience. This marked the beginning of Stepping High. What started out as a family send off quickly mushroomed into a festival, when the visiting friends returned with their friends and family. 

 

A symbol of “high” value, Stepping High has maintained its authenticity and holds strongly to the foundations upon which it was built: family, community, friendship and love. 

 

 

What We Offer

 

The Stepping High Festival offers a one of a kind experience showcasing a number of products including:

 

• The highest strain of naturally grown ganja—Indica, Sativa, Skunk, Sour Diesel, Kush and Khristal Light 

 

• Traditional herbs used for curative purposes—guinea hen root, meringue, Jamaican sarsaparilla, and blood wisp  and therapeutic uses of ganja are also displayed

 

• Arts and crafts from the local community of Westmoreland and across the island 

 

• Natural Jamaican food and juices

Stepping High has built and solidified a reputation for providing an authentic Jamaican experience in an environment which offers a cultural mix of Jamaican music, food and the highest strain of ganja and natural herbs. Through this festival Stepping High encourages community based tourism and provides an opportunity for local farmers and entrepreneurs to showcase their products, arts and crafts .
